Learning to Get Around
We have been in Japan for 4 1/2 weeks. Things are beginning to become a bit clearer to us and we are finding our way around.
Last Friday - December 2 - we went to the Tokyo LDS Temple. It was beautiful and we had a wonderful, spiritual time. It is similar to the Jordan River and Seattle Temples - but smaller. We rode up to the Temple with a church member and we were able to see some of beautiful Tokyo as we drove. The Tokyo Tower is beautiful at night - all gold and lite up impressivly.
Monday we ventured onto the train again and traveled back up to the Temple area. This time we attended a meeting with our Mission leaders and our church Area Presidency. It was lovely to share a Christmas dinner and program with them and the other Senior Missionaries. We had a wonderful evening and were given great counsel and encouragement by our leaders. AND Doug and I made it up and back home on the train without getting lost! Victory!!
Monday night around midnight we were awakened to learn that Baby Andrew Scott Nelson, son of Scott and his wife Karolyn had arrived healthy and well. This is grand baby # 17 for us and we are thrilled that all went well. We were able to meet him through video chat the next morning. We are so happy and feel very blessed.
Wednesday we had interviews with our mission president - President Warnick - in Yamate. This was a very special treat for me. It was there in September 1901, that my Great Grandfather, Apostle Heber J. Grant dedicated the land of Japan for missionary work. The church we met in on Wednesday is on a very steep hill. To get there we had to climb 350 steps. It is a lovely area, but in 1901, it was a less desirable area. The local fishermen all lived down by the water and let the Americans know that they could camp on the land up on the hill. Visiting here as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints - and knowing that missionary work in this great land, was the whole purpose of Grandpa Grant's trip there in 1901, was very humbling. I can't adequately express how much this meant to me.
Thursday - back on the train to Kamiooka for more mission business. We are getting this train thing all figured out. Three trips in one week!
Thursday afternoon - back in Yokosuka, we had a tour of the Carrier USS Ronald Reagan. That was fabulous. One of the sailors we work with at church is stationed on the Reagan. He was able to give us a tour. It was thrilling to be on this important ship. My Dad would have loved to have been with us that afternoon!

We have been here in Japan for about 10 days. We have learned so much and have sooooo much more to learn. Some of what we have learned so far:
Doug learning to drive on the left hand side of the road - my turn is still coming. Yikes!!
To use a washer/dryer combo - with all Japanese instructions.
We've set up our Magic Jack phones so we can call our family whenever - and time it so they aren't in bed.
The right way to walk to church - the first time we got lost and the Bishop had to come find us.
Shopping with all Japanese writing and the help of pictures.
To understand and use Yen.
How to ride the train into Tokyo, Three trains each way - we only got on the wrong ones 2 of 6 trains!!
Garbage day is 5 days a week. Different garbage goes out each time!! We are still "sorting " it all out:)
We've also learned that this is a beautiful country with beautiful people. They are kind and gracious and gentle. We have learned so much from them already.
We are grateful for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and for Him providing us this experience. We feel very blessed. We have so much more to learn. It will come and we are happy to be having this experience.
